Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description
On a 2 inch (5.08 cm) black disk a yellow torii all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border.

Symbolism
The torii which is a gate to a Shinto Temple suggests that Ryukus is the gateway of Japan.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the Ryukyus Command on 27 February 1950.  It was redesignated for the U.S. Army Ryukyu Islands on 11 October 1965.  (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-56)
